  1. Never Shake a Baby
  2. Back to Sleep – Sudden Infant Death Syndrome (SIDS)
  3. Fetal Alcohol Syndrome Disorder (FASD)
  4. Second Hand Smoke

We believe that children will break intergenerational cycles of violence and poor parenting. Since 1996, children in Roots of Empathy classes have been learning how to protect babies from harm. These messages will form their actions in childhood and adult life. Children become advocates bringing these public health/safety messages to their friends and families. The beauty of a child sharing a message of safety, whether it be protecting a baby’s lungs from the damage of smoke or preventing the invasive damage of alcohol to an unborn baby, is in the innocence and forthrightness that is unique to childhood.

These safety messages are delivered to elementary school children in the Roots of Empathy program.

All public health messages we deliver through the Roots of Empathy Curriculum are developmentally appropriate. They are designed to inform and not frighten. Even at the age of five, children become voices for their Roots of Empathy baby and generalize that advocacy to all babies, even those unborn. We should never underestimate the power of a child’s voice to bring an adult to responsible action.

All of our Roots of Empathy Safety Message brochures incorporate the wisdom of the children through the medium of their artwork.
